A contracture is shortened scar or soft tissue that limits joint motion. In burned hands, contractures can destroy grasp within weeks if positioning is neglected.
Anti-deformity principles
Therapists position joints opposite the expected scar pull. Exact positions depend on burn depth and location. Night orthoses are especially important because prolonged flexed sleeping postures favour deformity.
Therapy during wound care
Even while dressings are in place, safe passive or active motion may be prescribed. Coordination with the burn or plastic surgery team ensures grafts and fragile skin are not disrupted.
If a contracture has already formed
Serial casting, static-progressive orthoses, intensive therapy, and sometimes surgical release are options. Earlier intervention usually means less invasive correction.
