Compression Therapy for Hand Edema and Burn Scars

Compression Therapy for Hand Edema and Burn Scars

Compression is used for two related goals: reducing edema and applying sustained pressure to hypertrophic burn scars. Fit and wear time determine success.

Edema wraps

Self-adherent elastic wraps can provide adjustable compression after injury. They must not create a tourniquet effect. Monitor fingertip colour, warmth, and capillary refill.

Pressure garments

Custom or measured garments for burn scars are typically worn many hours daily for months during remodeling. Poor fit reduces pressure on the scar and wastes the treatment window.

Combine with therapy

Compression works best alongside moisturisation, silicone when indicated, orthoses, and exercise — not as a standalone fix.
