Off-the-shelf braces rarely match every hand shape, wound site, or surgical protocol. Custom thermoplastic orthoses are moulded to your limb so protection and correction are precise.
Common reasons for a custom splint
- Protect tendon or nerve repairs
- Immobilise fractures or unstable joints
- Rest inflamed tissues (for example, stenosing tenosynovitis protocols)
- Prevent or correct burn contractures
- Night positioning for stiffness or tone
Static vs dynamic designs
Static orthoses hold a position. Dynamic or static-progressive designs can apply controlled force to regain motion when your therapist and surgeon agree the tissue can tolerate load. Incorrect force or timing can harm repairs — never adjust hinges or straps yourself without guidance.
Wear and care tips
Follow the wear schedule (day, night, or continuous). Check skin under straps daily for redness that does not fade within 20–30 minutes. Keep the orthosis away from heat sources that can remould plastic. Bring it to every follow-up so fit can be refined as swelling changes.
