Hand Stiffness After Casting or Injury: What Helps

Immobilisation saves bones and soft tissues — and also shortens ligaments and promotes capsular tightness. Stiffness is therefore a predictable risk, not a personal failure.

What therapy targets

  • Edema first — a swollen finger will not bend well
  • Joint mobilisation and tendon gliding as appropriate
  • Heat before exercise when circulation allows (often later stage)
  • Static-progressive or serial orthoses for stubborn contractures
  • Functional grasp practice so gains transfer to real tasks

Pain vs productive discomfort

Mild stretch discomfort can be expected. Sharp pain, tingling that worsens, or swelling that balloons after exercise means the dose is too high — tell your therapist.

Educational information only. It does not replace assessment by a qualified clinician. Seek urgent care for severe pain, infection signs, sudden loss of sensation, or circulation changes.
