Collagen remodeling in a scar is a long biological process. Many scars remain metabolically active for 12–18 months or longer, especially after burns.
Immature scars
Often red, raised, itchy, and warm. They respond best to silicone, pressure, moisturisation, sun protection, and motion programs.
Maturing scars
Colour fades toward surrounding skin, height may flatten, and itch usually decreases. Therapy continues if motion is limited or appearance remains problematic.
Why stopping early backfires
Patients sometimes stop silicone or garments when the scar “looks better,” then see rebound hypertrophy. Your clinician will advise when weaning is safe.
