International scar-management consensus statements commonly list silicone gel or sheeting as first-line non-invasive therapy for hypertrophic scars and for prevention in high-risk wounds once the skin is healed.
How silicone is thought to work
Occlusion and hydration of the stratum corneum appear to modulate fibroblast activity and collagen production in the scar. Consistent daily use over many weeks matters more than occasional application.
Practical tips
- Start only on closed skin
- Clean skin and silicone regularly
- Build wear time as tolerated toward many hours per day
- Combine with sun protection and prescribed exercises
- Stop and seek advice if rash or maceration develops
Silicone is not magic alone
Raised burn scars may also need pressure garments and orthoses. Keloids can be more stubborn and may require medical procedures beyond therapy products.
