Tendons connect muscle to bone. After repair, the suture line must be protected while the tendon still glides through its sheath. Modern hand therapy protocols often use early controlled motion rather than weeks of complete stillness, because prolonged immobilisation promotes adhesions.
Flexor vs extensor considerations
Flexor tendons (palm and finger flexion) run in tight tunnels and are adhesion-prone. Extensor tendons on the dorsum have different mechanics and zones. Your orthosis and exercise list are zone-specific — copying a friend‘s protocol is unsafe.
What “protected motion” means
You move within a safe arc while the orthosis or therapist prevents stretch that could rupture the repair. Place-and-hold and tendon-gliding drills are common examples when prescribed.
Adherence decides outcomes
Research and clinical experience consistently show that patients who follow orthosis and exercise schedules recover better glide and strength. Missing days of prescribed motion can stiffen the system quickly.
