Patients often wait for “full healing” before therapy. For many hand conditions, that delay is exactly when stiffness and adhesions set in.
Start early when cleared
After many surgeries, therapists begin within days under protocol. After simple sprains or stable fractures, early edema control and protected motion may begin almost immediately once serious injury is ruled out.
Do not DIY aggressive stretching
Early care is not the same as forceful stretching. Tendon repairs and unstable fractures need precise limits. A hand therapist translates the surgical plan into safe daily practice.
Late starters still benefit
Even months later, therapy can improve motion and function, though gains may be slower and surgery is sometimes needed for mature contractures.
